Prom Night

A Little Bonus For The New Book

Hi Everyone!

It’s release day for Anything Other Than You! To celebrate I thought I’d do a little expirment.

One of the leads of Anything Other Than You is Rebecca Klein, she’s an actress, who for the six years preceedingng the action of the book has been working on a prime time soap opera called Over The Rivers. While the fictional town of Overton Beach, North Carolina is specifically meant to evoke Wilmington, where Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill shot, Rivers is no show in particular. I’ve Frankensteined elements from Dawson’s and OTH, obviously, but also Beverly Hills: 90210, The OC, Gossip Girl, Gilmore Girls, Greek, Felicity, Pretty Little Liars, Veronica Mars and any number of others.

I thought it might be fun to start writing scenes from Over The Rivers just for fun, and I’ll share them occasionally here. (And maybe collect them if I get enough)

So, here’s one such snippet. It’s prom night for Aimee Rivers (Rebecca) and Cole Hamilton (Her Piece of Crap Ex, Brad Majors). Filmed days after Rebecca caught Brad cheating on her, it was one of the more difficult days of her life.

Prom Night

Aimee stared into the mirror and brushed her hair off her shoulder, it had been blown dry and then recurled and pinned off to the side so it rolled down one shoulder. She was wearing a pink dress, all chiffon with a beaded bodice, and large poofy skirt. She’d felt silly at first when she’d pulled it off the rack, but when she’d put it on, she’d felt like a princess.

“Oh baby!” Her mother whispered, covering her mouth and her eyes shining with tears.

“It’s not too much?” She whispered.

“No,” Mom smiled and kissed her on the forehead. “Come on, the boys are downstairs.” Aimee giggled and she stepped down the stairs, at the bottom, Cole was wearing a black tuxedo, his dark blond hair combed back off his face, and he was looking at her like someone had just punched him the face.

“Aims,” he said softly, “you look amazing.” She smiled.

“So do you,” she said. He smiled and they pressed their foreheads together.

“Yeah, you cleaned up OK, squirt,” her brother Brian said, leaning casually against a column near the door. His girlfriend Kara smacked him on the shoulder while Aimee stuck out her tongue at Brian who, returned the gesture.

“You do look great, Aimee,” Kara said. Aimee giggled and Brian’s phone buzzed and he excused himself and stepped away. (Reenie Note: Brian is getting a call from Jaime Diaz, played by Carlos Almadez, asking to bail him out of jail. Carlos is not amused in the slightest by this storyline.)

"Have fun you two,” her father Adam smiled ushering them out the door. They got into Cole’s car and started driving.

“I can’t believe how lucky I am,” he whispered, as they danced later. Aimee looked up at him. “I love you so much Aims, sometimes I think,” he exhaled. “Are you sure about tonight?”

“Of course I’m sure,” she said. “I love you, I’ve always loved you, I always will.” He pulled her close and the dress rustled. They’d talked about this, having sex for the first time. “Did you find the place?”

“Yeah, I did,” he said. She rested her head against his chest. She was ready, she wanted him so much.

After the dance the car roared down the road, Aimee leaned back and Cole looked at her as they were heading out to his family’s house at the beach. They were singing along to the radio and when the headlights appeared coming right towards them, Aimee screamed.

“Cole, look out!” Before everything went black in a crunching of metal.
